Jim Arter is the author of Gruel and Unusual Punishment, a young adult book published by Bantam, Doubleday, and Dell in 1990, and Dell Yearling in 1993. The book's title is what seventh-grade troublemaker Arnold Dinklighter calls the cafeteria food served in the school detention room. The American Library Association named Gruel and Unusual Punishment Best Book for Young Adults and Recommended Book for Reluctant Readers.
Arter is a teacher at South Vienna Middle School in the Northeastern District in Clark County, Ohio. He says he's been teaching Ancient World History for so long, the class was originally called Current Events.
Jim Arter lives in Urbana, Ohio, with his wife, Paula, and son, Seth.
